Abortion care has long been under attack. Right now, reproductive health clinics are disappearing across the country, while Crisis Pregnancy Centers, which spread disinformation about pregnancy and abortion, are thriving. It is critical that Congress pass the Stop Anti-Abortion Disinformation (SAD) Act (H.R. 8210/S. 4469), which would provide a critical tool for ensuring patients’ right to legitimate information about their care. Act now to make your voice heard.
Write to your Members of Congress to urge them to cosponsor and pass the Stop Anti-Abortion Disinformation Act.
For decades, JCPA has advocated at the state and federal levels, joined amicus briefs, and adopted policy resolutions in support of reproductive freedom, which is now in grave peril.
Access to legitimate abortion clinics is more important than ever in the wake of Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization. While Crisis Pregnancy Centers frequently advertise themselves as medical providers of comprehensive health care, and market to people who experience unplanned pregnancy, they generally do not employ licensed medical personnel nor provide referrals for birth control or abortion. Instead, Crisis Pregnancy Centers intentionally mislead patients about their options during pregnancy and delay time-sensitive care with the intention of coercing them to go through with the pregnancy, obstructing patients’ right to honest and accurate medical treatment.
Today, there are approximately 2,500 Crisis Pregnancy Centers in the US, triple the number of legitimate reproductive health clinics.
The SAD Act would direct the Federal Trade Commission to prohibit deceptive or misleading advertising related to abortion services and authorizes it to penalize those in violation. In addition, the bill would acknowledge the harmful influence Crisis Pregnancy Centers have on our country by spreading dangerous and deeply biased information.
